Celebrating the life of
Edward F. Jungemann
August 26, 1918 - March 03, 2012
Edward F. Jungemann, 93, passed peacefully from this life on March 3, 2012 at his home under care of Hospice Savannah. Born in 1918 in Savannah to parents Edward F. and Sara Masters Jungemann, he graduated from Savannah High School, Class of '36. As an 8 year old boy, little Eddie fell in love with airplanes after listening to the radio broadcast of Charles Lindbergh's flight to Paris. From that moment, his life revolved around any activity that would help him achieve his dream of flying. He became a pilot at age 19 and began barnstorming from town to town in open-cockpit biplanes. He became an instructor in the Civilian Pilot Training Program.
As WWII loomed, he answered the call to serve his country instructing American, British, and French air cadets. While a Squadron Commander at the Southeast Air Corp Training Center in Albany, GA, Ed met the love of his life, Helen Brown Jungemann. They were married in 1941 and celebrated 68 years before her passing in 2009. Their first daughter, Susan Claire, preceded them in death. They have two other daughters, Mary and Ann.
After the war, Ed returned to Savannah and over time opened a number of aviation service companies FBO'S, meeting the many needs of General Aviation, including maintenance, sales, fuel, charter, and instruction. He operated Airflight, Inc. at what was then Hunter Field. Later when general aviation moved to Travis Field, he opened Savannah Air Service, Inc. and in recent years at what became the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport, he established Savannah Aviation, Inc.. He also operated Island Aviation, the first FBO at Hilton Head, SC. In his spare time, Ed built an open-cockpit Starduster Two in his garage. He was a member of the Georgia Aviation Trades Association and the National Aviation Trades Association. He was listed in the 1971-72 edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
Ed was appointed by Gov. Joe Frank Harris to sit on the board of the Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame in Warner Robins, GA. Years later, he was honored as a 2004 inductee in that very same Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame. Jungemann's life in aviation is told in an auto-biographical collection of short stories, Aviation As I Knew It and Flew It. He was a member of the West Chatham Exchange Club, past Commander of the Tybee Light Power Squadron and was also a member of the Windsor Forest Golden Age Center.
Ed was a faithful member of White Bluff Presbyterian Church where he served many years on the Board of Elders and sang in the Chancel Choir. He was a member of the Joy Sunday School Class and Men of the Church. He leaves behind daughters, Mary Pilgrim and Ann Robertson Randy. He also leaves a grandson, Randall Robertson Rachel and extended family.
The family invites you to attend a celebration of Ed's life which will be held Saturday, March 10, at White Bluff Presbyterian Church. Viewing and visitation will begin at 10:00am and funeral service immediately following at 11:00. Burial is private. Remembrances may be made to White Bluff Presbyterian Church or Hospice Savannah.
